2022 Passeggiata
Growing Season: Rarely do we get generosity and high quality in the same year. However, the 2022 vintage gifted us with both! A warm dry summer with just enough rain to keep things humming along was followed by a very dry harvest season, with only one significant rain event. The wines have very good acidity, even better than the 2021's. The reds were uniformly healthy and we got to pick them at our leisure, so we could wait for just the right ripeness levels without worrying about weather events. We got our first wines from Live Edge this year and, while we don't expect the same level of complexity we get from the older vines at BAV, we were happy with the quality of the fruit.
Wine Making Notes: Estate-grown and sustainably farmed on our 146-acre farm, our grapes are tended by hand throughout the growing season and are harvested by hand in the fall. Passeggiata is made from our bleed wine. Once the fruit is picked, destemmed, and crushed, the berries, juice, pulp and seeds all go into a stainless-steel fermentation tank. Once the tanks are filled, we run off or "bleed" a portion of the juice. The bleed portion can be anywhere from 15% to 40% of the total juice volume. This bleeding process allows for a greater skin to juice ratio in our primary wine, which helps to increase depth, richness and concentration. The bleed juice is put into a separate tank and is fermented cold and slowly, similar to how our whites are fermented. For Passeggiata, once the main wine tank is drained, we put the bleed juice back into the tank for a second time so it can soak up all that the cap has to offer to create the foundation of our Passeggiata!
Notes/background: Our lightest style red that may or may not be entirely all red. I don’t know what this wine is made up of, but does seem to be a tiny bit “bigger” than previous iterations and is definitely a bit more fruity with lots of cherry-berry-plum going on. I think this is the best Passeggiata in recent memory. More fruity but has plenty of oomph along with it.
Suggested Service Temp: 58-62 to start – can go a bit cooler and allow to warm up while drinking
